To Live is Christ

For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. ~Paul, Philippians 1:21

Paul, the writer of Philippians, was all in when it came to following Jesus. His love of God motivated each of his words and actions. His love of people was the evidence. This passage says, “Now, if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful work for me, and I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ—which is far better—but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your (the people living in Philippi) sake.”

Paul wanted to remain living and working because he valued the people. He could see that it was working. The Philippians were growing into a joyful faith that put Jesus on display in a positive light. I think Paul made the right choice by wishing to live.

Paul includes this statement. “Just one thing, as citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ.” In the times we find ourselves in, it’s important to remember the origins of our citizenship. As citizens of heaven we can call on a higher source to guide my words and actions. I want God to be proud of what I do. I want to live a life worthy of Jesus, who taught us to love others, show mercy, lift the weak, seek justice for the voiceless, feed the hungry, heal the sick, and many other praiseworthy things.

As we find ourselves in difficult times, perhaps look to our true governing power, God, and allow his ways to determine our next steps and choices. Let’s live a life worthy. Let’s make Paul’s statement true. “To live is Christ.”

So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God... ~Paul, Colossians 2:10
