Go Ahead, Take a Bite

Give it a taste and see if you like it.

I have said that countless times over the years to children (and sometimes adults) that have sat around my table. The “taste and see” encouragement usually comes when the groan escapes their lips brought on by unfamiliar food. It would take a bite to know whether the food was delicious. (Trust me. I never cook anything that does not taste good on purpose.) When urging them to take a chance, I also add, “Who knows? It just might be your favorite.”

You cannot know the taste of something by looking at it. Oh, you can know what others say about the taste. The smell might give an indicator, but it will take a bite and engage your taste buds to know the goodness for yourself. There is just no other way to determine a taste.

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who trusts in him. Psalms 34:8

I love that this psalm writer says, “Go ahead, take a bite. Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Patty Amplified Version). I can invite you to the table and tell you about my experience with God and how good he is, but until you taste and see for yourself, you will not know, so I urge you to go ahead and take a bite.

Tasting will be necessary to know God for yourself, but where do you start? When I am looking for a good recipe, I ask other people about what they enjoy, then I look up a recipe, cook it up, and taste it for myself. The same is true when wanting to know about God. Ask around. Question your friends who know God about what they like about him.

I know, I know, I just said you could not know how something tastes from others’ experience, but it is a place to start. You can also read about God and Jesus in the Bible. Look for the stories of love, faithfulness, forgiveness, and acceptance Jesus offered to those he encountered. They’re pretty amazing. And when you are ready to see for yourself that he’s the real deal, go ahead, take a bite, and start your journey with him. You will not be disappointed. He brings an unbelievably delicious life for us to taste and savor.

May God of hope fill you with all the joy and peace in believing so that by the power of the Holy Spirit, you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

Have a great day! Thanks for stopping by. It was nice to see you. I pray that something I said will encourage you to become a fully devoted follower of Jesus. He has the best adventures.
