Happy New Year!
Here we are in the season of pondering what life would look like if we made a few changes to better ourselves. I do it. January brings the idea of the promise of a new way of doing things. I always tend to think of losing the holiday celebration weight and moving more to regain my youthful mobility. Then there is reading more, creating more, seeing more, connecting more. All really great things. But what if, this coming new year, we chose to invest more of the gifts and resources we have? Would it change the look of the coming year?
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 2 Corintians 9:6
This thought of sowing abundantly occurred over the past week while listening to Little Drummer Boy. I find faith lessons everywhere. Lol! This time, the lesson was to take what you have, a drum in this case, and use it to honor God. That’s the point of the song: bring what you have, but there’s more. I think the idea that it’s a drum is important. It could have been a flute or guitar. That would have a much gentler lullaby effect, but they chose a drum. Drums are loud and, in the hands of a child, even louder. I know. I have a three-year-old who loves drumming.
Just picture what it would look to sow our talents and resources with the confidence of a three-year-old playing a drum. What would happen if we invested what we have in a big way? I think the harvest would be rich. The world would change. God’s kingdom would spread, we would have more seeds to sow, and the process would repeat again and again.
So, let’s sow the seeds of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Let’s throw in justice and righteousness for good measure. Let’s be loud and confident and generous as we use our gifts and talents to spread the message of God and his goodness into the world. Let’s shake things up. Let’s change the world!
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8
