We have gone wandering.

(Well, it’s been a while but I still wanted to share our adventure.)

My husband, Paul, had a birthday back in February, and to celebrate we set out for some fun in the nearby state of Arkansas. On recommendation, we chose Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and the Wanderoo Lodge as our destination. Were we ever glad. The town is so cute with lots of shops, restaurants, and places to explore all set in the beautiful Ozark Mountains.

The Wanderoo Lodge is a newly renovated travel lodge motel. Our room was very nice with fun decor, a very comfortable king-sized bed, a beautiful walk-in shower, and plenty of room for our little munchkin to run off a little steam after our road trip.

When we arrived, check-in was a breeze. We chose to eat at The Garvel Bar, their on-site restaurant, both nights we were there. This was a good option for us with their salads, flatbread pizzas, and sandwiches. Since Jayme is an “early to bed” girl, it was nice being a few steps from our room. They also have live music most weekends and they did not disappoint. We enjoyed the sounds of a great band with an amazing harmonica player from the comfort of our room while our girl slept the night away and we played a few hands of cribbage.

The first morning there, we finished with breakfast before the shops opened so we took a leisurely walk around town and scoped out places we wanted to come back to and visit. It was a great help. Jayme loves to look at things but she has a limit to her “want to” when it comes to shopping. By planning ahead, she was in good form and we got to see what we wanted. And a couple of prints from the folk artists may have made their way home with us just because I could browse a bit.

Exploring this artsy community with its colorful Victorian houses that seem to climb up the side of the mountain was so much fun. It grew up in the 1880s around the spring and its “magical properties” and has been a destination to get away from it all since. The town today still offers the spa experience but there are also quite a few artists and their work. You can also see some quirky art pieces all around town. And don’t miss the Christ of the Ozarks statue. It is pretty impressive.

We had a joyful and relaxing time. We made new discoveries, talked a lot along the way, and reconnected. It’s just what wandering is all about.

A little stop along our way.

We took a break on our way to Arkansas and hiked to Natural Falls. It’s really a short walk with lots of stairs. Little Miss J did just fine so it’s not too bad. It was a fun little adventure in very pleasant surroundings.

Now more than ever do I realize that I will never be content with a sedentary life, that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere. –
