This is an amazing view of the sun rising over the earth. My eye is drawn to the more densely populated areas where the light is the brightest. But even in the remote places there’s still a glimmer of life that can be seen from far above the planet.

I saw something like this, although not from quite the same height, when flying to Seattle a few years back. There was quite a bit of cloud cover that night, but it did not block out the glow of the towns and cities I passed over. I could see their lights shining up through the mist. It was an equally beautiful sight giving me a feeling I can only describe as warmth.

Jesus called us, His followers, the light of the world. We are described as the light in our families, neighborhoods and communities. Just as in this picture, we stand out and draw attention. When we gather there is more light but even separately we illuminate the dark spaces. I think this light, just as the light I saw shining up through the clouds, adds a certain warmth to our society.

If I may, please let me give you one more thing to consider. How did you feel the last time the lights went out? Lost, fearful, uncertain? Or did you know right where to find a light source? Let’s share that knowledge with others who may find themselves stumbling. We need to embrace our roles as light in a world living in darkness. Let’s draw attention to the One we draw power from. Plug into Him and SHINE your light!
